Episode 43 - Revolution

I have spent much of the last week with my family, so inevitably, the topic of revolution came up.  (Like me, my siblings believe that nonviolent, but radical change needs to happen, and soon)  These conversations have put me in a certain mood, best exemplified by the raw energy of punk and hardcore.  This is not a very metal episode, though it is certainly full of both rage and frustration.  Power to the people!

Episode 41 - Punk Rock Rage

There has been much going on recently, so my into may drag on a bit.  To begin, I'd like to reference some national events.  Those in the United States should be aware already that there have been multiple incidents in recents months where young black men have died at the hands of police officers.  In two recent cases, the officers involved in the deaths of both Michael Brown and Eric Garner were not indicted for their actions.  To my mind, the situation has evolved to the point where black men are fair game to become police targets (or in the case of Trayvon Martin, vigilante targets).  Statistically, black men are much more likely to be arrested in the United States and also more likely to be injured or killed during interactions with police.  This must end!  In light of my anger at this situation, I have prepared a rage-filled episode of crust, hardcore, and anarcho-punk...music of the revolution.

On a happier, more local scale, I had the opportunity last night to see Dakhma live (a band that a interviewed a few weeks ago).  It was unfortunately the final (for now) performance of the band as a four-piece.  Bassist John Cates is moving on to other endeavors.  It was clear in talking to the band last night that the split is amicable.  John will be pursuing a career as a photographer, specifically photographing other bands.  I wish him well and will post a link to his blog when I have it.  In terms of a live performance, the band put on a show.  After a mellow start, they raised the intensity.  Singer Claire especially brought the manic energy to a fever pitch.  In his last show, John played bass pacing like a madman.  The guitars and drums were both tight, but visually in the background more than the other two.  The band played several new songs, and I'm excited for what is coming.  Hopefully, we'll see it recorded and on the air here soon.  I wish them well in their life as a three-piece however long it lasts.

Episode 39 - Interview with Dahkma

This week features an interview with the local (to me) blackened crust band Dakhma.  Though they have only one release (technically a demo) to their name, Dakhma is already very impressive.  Their songs channel a potent rage and really breath with passion.  I was able to do the interview face to face with three of the four members of the band in their basement practice space.  They are all cool people that I really enjoyed interviewing.  I hope to fit an opportunity to see them live into my schedule soon.  Due to my inferior recording equipment and general lack of experience, there is a weird buzzing in parts of the interview, but it is mostly clean.  I was able to remove most of it.  Directly before the interview, I play my favorite track from their demo.  Directly after is a track they chose.  I hope you enjoy.

Episode 38 - Interview with Uzala

Today's episode features the last of my interviews from the Gilead Media Fest, this time with Chad Remains of Uzala.  If and when I can make the arrangements, I still hope to redo the wind destroyed interview with George Paul of Mutilation Rites.  Today's episode has some pretty rough patches as well, but I think there is enough there to make it worthwhile.  It was a pretty interesting conversation and Chad seemed like a genuinely good guy.  I hope you tough it out to hear the interesting parts.  Like so many of these, Uzala is not a CC licensed band, but I'll give you some links to check them out.

Episode 37: Gilead Interview with Loss

This week I feature an interview I did with Loss at the Gilead Media Fest this summer.  Loss is an American Death-Doom band from Nashville, Tennessee.  They play slow, ponderous music filled with emotion.  Quite honestly, I tend to not enjoy music which is as slow as what they play, but somehow, they make it gripping.  I can't encourage you enough to go check this band out.  I'll try to play similar music, but really, I just wish these guys were CC so I could play them.  Click the links below to check them out.

Episode 36: Interview with Owlfood

Time for another Gilead interview, though this one is a little weird.  Owlfood was at Gilead Fest, but we didn't get together to do this interview until a couple of weeks ago.  In addition, I was caught out on another interview while at the fest and missed their set.  That said, their recorded material is pretty cool.  Its much more meditative, but I think comes from a similar emotional place as many of the bands at Gilead.   I don't think I did a very good job of running an episode with similar music, so you'll just have to check them out for yourself.  This is a more meditative playlist however.  I hope you enjoy.

Re-Run: Santa Marta Golden Episode

So, I've had real trouble getting to the show this week.  I'm a high school teacher in my other life and grades are due this week.  Sadly, I do not have a new episode for you.  Instead, I'm re-running the episode where I interview Mel Arise from Santa Marta Golden.  It was on a Tuesday night (not my normal night), so my theory is that some of you may have missed it.  I'll be back next week with an episode centered around an interview with the band Owlfood.  I'm reposting my blog comments as originally written.

Here we go again!  I've had a crazy fun summer that included an exceptionally cool music festival (Gilead Media Fest), a total of 3 weeks of camping (one of which was in a pretty remote area where I woke up to a wolf in the campsite one morning...very cool!), and (not so cool) a significant computer issue which put this project on hold until I could get a new computer, transfer all my music over, etc.  I have interviews with ten different bands from Gilead Fest to play in the coming weeks, but this week, I finally have an interview with Mel Arise, the lead singer of lyric writer for Santa Marta Golden.  As I use their song Yi as my theme song every week, I think this is a pretty important one.  It turned out to be a pretty good interview too, in spite of the fact that I can only speak one language and english is the weakest of her three languages.  Thanks Mel for such a great interview!  Before I ramble on too much, here is the playlist:

Episode 35 - Gilead Interview with Geryon

On Saturday at the Gilead Media Fest this past summer, I had the opportunity to see the two piece death metal band Geryon perform.  This has got to be one of the more unique bands that I've seen in that the band has only two members, a bassist and a drummer.  The sound is heavy, brutal, and unique.  In addition, I had the opportunity to interview both members, who turned out to be great guys, insightful about their music and music in general, and more than willing to give a great interview.  As you'll hear, they are both in other bands, including being the rhythm section for the USBM band Krallice.  I apologize that there is some wind noise I was unable to remove.  I think its still well worth the listen.

Episode 34 - Gilead Interview with Hexer

Episode 33 - Anagnorisis: Gilead Media Fest

Anagnorisis is another band I saw this past summer at the Gilead Media Fest.  They were a last minute fill in when Inter Arma dropped off the bill last minute.  Because of this, I was unable to arrange an interview at the fest, and in fact just completed the interview with Samuel Hartman this afternoon (Sunday).  The band actually played on the first day of the festival, with the second day starting out with last week's interview Protestant, so I'm back tracking in order a bit in posting this now.  Talking with Sam was a really cool experience and I ended up with an interview almost 45 minutes long.  Hopefully you'll be as intrigued as I was as this means less music and more talking this week.  Since all of the releases from Anagnorisis are available under Creative Commons license, I'll also play songs from the three older release to give you a picture of the evolution of the band.   In spirit of one of (in my opinion) the best modern USBM bands, I'll be playing mostly black metal this week.  I hope you enjoy.
